Great food, pretty good atmosphere, nice waitresses, but pretty damn expensive compared to other breakfast restaurants

If you like comfort food, then you will almost certainly find something to love at Sunrise Sunset. If you're not into comfort food, then Yelp may not be right for you. I ate here for breakfast this morning, and after getting my fill of homestyle cooking, I realized I have yet to review this, one of the crowning jewels in Highlands cookin'. After giving loyal patronage to this blessed breakfast bungalow for the three years and counting, it's time to give credit where credit is due. Dear Sunrise Sunset: thanks for making this recovering starving college student a lot more fulfilled. My roommates and I make it into Sunrise Sunset every month or two, usually for a weekend breakfast. The only reason we don't frequent it more often is probably the part of our lizardbrains that is averse to the image of a distended belly and thunderthighs. Yes, their dishes are a little slick with grease. But please, don't let the Kashi commercials fool you, folks: this is the way firstmeal is SUPPOSED to be. The menu selection is sumptuous and just a little oddball, in a wonderfully down-home way. Their pancakes are enormous and fluffy, the bacon is cooked to perfection, and their homemade jam puts Smuckers to shame. My personal favorite are their 'Sunshines', the restaurant's trademark. Skillets comprised of fried potatoes, a specialized theme (e.g. country gravy, Italian sausage and marinara, fresh veggies, etc.), and topped with basted eggs, there's one for everybody. They're also the best hangover cure known to man. Mark my words: next time you feel Sunday morning coming down, cut it to the chase and order up a Sunshine to hit the spot. The food at Sunrise Sunset keeps me happy, but the service keeps me coming back. The waitstaff at this place hasn't changed much since I started coming in a few years ago, and I wouldn't have it any other way. These waitresses are of the breed that isn't afraid to call you 'hon' and mean it. Even during a breakfast rush, they're assuredly friendly, attentive, and QUICK on their game. Reminds me of a nicer version of Mayberry...simply put, even if I have to wait a few minutes for a table (not a rare occurrence on a weekend morning), I always feel at home by the time I'm in my seat. While I could rant and rave about why Sunrise Sunset is high on my list of 'last menu' restaurants, it's not without its downsides. This location isn't vary spacious, so sometimes you have to wait for a booth to open up--well worth your patience, though. And their cuisine, while heavenly, can carry some hellacious side effects, including the desire to not eat again for the duration of the day, and an urgent trip to the commode soon after consumption. Their incendiary 'Lumbre' menu is especially persistent on the latter offense. I guess there is a price to pay for food this authentically homemade... Nevertheless, the bottom line is this: breakfast is my favorite meal of the day, and Sunrise Sunset is my favorite breakfast-themed restaurant, hands-down. Their Sunshines are so damned flavor-packed, I feel guilty for sampling the rest of their menu so rarely (I can't even imagine eating lunch here, and yet the burgers look delicious!). Have a look at the menu--good luck finding something unappealing--and let the staff take care of the rest. If it's the weekend, chances are you earned the siesta, and Sunrise Sunset is more than happy to accomodate.

I go with my mom here all the time and this place has the best breakfast in town! The staff is always pleasant and their skillets are amazing! They have a really different menu so its not the same boring stuff you get at other restaurants.

Our first time here, it was SOOO good! Great green chile, went great on my omelet! Wonderful selection of items, love that you can also design your own meal. They give you your own carafe of coffee and a pitcher of water, wish I lived close by.

This is a Denver classic place where the OJ is fresh, the french toast is soft and creamy and the staff is Colorado friendly.

I would almost always choose the (more) independent restaurant to a big chain, but honestly, Denny's has Sunrise Sunset beat. When I actually manage to get out of bed early enough to eat breakfast, it's because I had to, so I don't want to waste a lot of time eating. Unfortunately, Sunrise simply does not give you this choice. Service is painfully slow and I'm pretty sure that the owners went to Denny's, IHOP, and Village Inn and then did their best to copy the dishes without actually eating them to see what they should taste like. Very disappointing.

yummy! lots of food! (too much, if you ask me. i think they could actually give slightly smaller portions, charge 2 bucks less per plate and we'd be good.) that being said... i've been here twice in 2 weekends. it can get busy. the first saturday we went our waitress told us she had served over 100 tables already! the next weekend, it was not nearly as busy and we sat immediately. both times the service was great. friendly, prompt and attentive. i have had the bacon and tomato omelette (delicious with a ton of bacon and cheeses!) and blueberry pancakes. not terrible, but i wouldn't order the pancakes again. my breakfast buddy has had the lumbre sunshine (they are not kidding.. it is *HOT*) and the sundance. both of these are a lot of food. be prepared to share. coffee is hot and decent, and you get a pot on your table, so that saves the servers some time. plus, they are totally cool if you pour the coffee wrong and the whole pot spills...ummm....everywhere. totally cool if something like that should happen. (p.s. i will not pour coffee there ever again.) i like this place. just a diner, but overall, pretty good. ** edit ** i had to delete the review of the sunrise sunset to change the address. i have only been to this location. ... on 38th ave.

So I'm kind of torn. I've been here a few times and it's always been good. I always sit at the bar and the service is great. The three stars goes to the food but I couldn't give three overall. I've always liked that you get your own pitcher of water and coffee.... But today that kind of changed. Idk if I should even care, but I watched them clear table after table and take the pitchers of coffee that were on them and dump them back into a big coffee machine that they then filled all the "New" pitchers up with. That's GROSS! So the coffee I'm drinking could have potentiality been at 20 different tables since 6am this morning? Hmmmm. I don't even want to know what they do with the water pitchers. Oh wait.. just found out. They clear the pitchers from the table, set them by the drink machine, and then just fill them up without dumping what was in there already. Am I being petty? This seems GROSS to me. Idk. Food is great though. Just hope they aren't "recycling" their eggs in the back. That is all!

My wife and I went there this last Friday morning for the first time as we had a coupon. We will be going back quite a bit now. The breakfasts were quite large and VERY good. One of the best breakfasts we have had, and my wife is a fussy eater. The chicken fried steak was the best I have had and my wife's bacon benedict was also incredible. The jam on the table, also the best! The restaurant was also one of the cleanest I have been in. This is our new breakfast spot now when we are in the area.

No thank you. -I got the vegetarian eggs benedict thinking it would be a least a TAD healthier than the meat version. The vegetables seemed fresh, but they were COVERED in cheese. I love cheese, not on a benedict. -Their hollandaise sauce tasted like it was straight from a package mixed with some water. There was so much of this goop on my plate that the English muffins were soggy underneath. -They don't poach the eggs, they baste them. I asked for them "over medium" but the yolks were complete liquid. I finished less than a third of what was on my plate. When a dish like this costs $10 I would MUCH rather fork over another buck or two at Snooze and wait 20 minutes. No less than 5 minutes after we left, my fiance and I were complaining of stomach aches. We had to book it home.... I won't be returning.

Ironically, Sunrise Sunset does not stay open till sunset. Think, breakfast and lunch. They do however open very early to accommodate Wheat Ridge's aging retirees who get up at 6am to drink coffee and despair over the state of "kids these days" and "grandkids these days" and "great-grandkids these days." To keep those aging tickers ticking, Sunrise Sunset cooks all of their Colorado-produced eggs in water by basting them. The result is a perfectly cooked egg however you order it. I recommend you try the vegetarian benedict or the black bean breakfast burrito with green chili. You can't go wrong because everything on the menu is good, affordable, and served quickly by a fantastic server. So go, drink coffee, and complain all you want. But you won't be complaining about the food, which is quite good.

  • Kristine S.

Okay, so maybe it is not so fancy. Maybe the coffee is just coffee and not a latte or Americano, maybe it's full of Wheat Ridge old people, but I can tell you one thing for sure: They have THE BEST PANCAKES!!! I call them Crack Cakes. I want one right now.

I really wanted to like this place more than I did. It was typical breakfast fare but didn't have the wow factor. I can say it was nice to eat at a place that served a plate of breakfast that didn't look like it was swimming in oil. The prices were a bit steep for breakfast food and it's clear they're not spending their money on the decor.

Delicious, amazing, best breakfast ever! Had a Spanish omelette and my husband had a country omelette. Lovely!

Exactly what you expect from a mom and pop place. Service is always quick and the food is always good! Definitely worth a try if you love a skillet breakfast!

Been there several times for breakfast. Decent food in abundant portions. It always seems busy but we never had to wait. Nothing fancy but worth giving it a try. The last time we were there we were at a table parked right under the air conditioner. I can tell you that AC worked fine but I have to admit I was happy to finish my meal and get out from under it. Brrrr!

This is my second time trying this restaurant . There partners with my United Card so I earn miles eating here. First time I was in a hurry and didn't pay much attention to the quality or service. This time I'm definitely paying attention. I was greeted by friendly staff. I ordered the 2+2+2 (2 eggs, 2 cakes, 2 bacon ) and added Blueberries to my pancakes. They give you these cool little pitchers with water which is brilliant . My food came out at reasonable time and most importantly my eggs were nice and warm ( not room temperature) . My Blueberry pancakes were really good with berries in the batter and on top. Service was good . Enjoyed my breakfast very much, I think I'll eat here more often. I only gave 3 stars because I think they could do a little better. It would be 3.5 almost 4.

It's a breakfast and lunch "diner" with a bar and table service. Always a fan of that set up for anything that claims to be a diner/cafe. Good amount of choices for breakfast. Never eaten lunch their so not sure about that. They are good with substitutions on omlettes and plates. So add or subtract your choices for what you want.

This is our go-to breakfast place. It's brunch if you like or just the best pancakes you'll ever have. Great service and a relaxing atmosphere!

This is my go-to breakfast joint. There is hardly ever a long wait and they have the BEST corned beef hash I have ever tasted. The bacon is cooked to perfection, and (I think) fresh squeezed orange juice is yummy. Service is always attentive but not hovering and it is always clean. Bonus-this family owned and operated business. Yay for local business!

  • Fred D.

My wife and i always hit this place when we are shopping on that end of town. The service is second to none and so is the food. My favorites are the bacon benedict and the fresh corned beef hash. Jill waited on us yesterday and i know she did not remember us but she made us feel like long lost friends and her smile was enough to cheer me up after a long week of work. I love this place.

Great food and wonderful service! However, they are very expensive for a breakfast cafe. At least $14.00 for one meal.

What a welcoming dinner! We sat at the breakfast bar, contemplating what to get. I settled on a Spanish omelette with sausage- super tasty! I also got the grapefruit juice, a little disappointed it wasn't fresh-squeezed. Overall, just your typical diner! Nice place to eat

Its clean and cozy and the food, standard breakfast fare, is solid. I don't like that they have that heavy handed green-chili-on-everything Denver thing. Then again, it is a coffee shop and it is Denver. Expecting a delicate touch or sophisticated palate wouldn't be too fair. The server was forgetful but friendly. The menu unnecessarily complicated. But I'd come back for bacon and eggs. Points for putting a water pitcher and coffee pot on the table.

Sunrise/Sunset is hands-down my favorite breakfast place in the area! I moved to the Wheat Ridge are last year and have already eaten here a dozen times. Everything I've tried (all breakfast items) has been SO delicious and perfectly prepared. They have a lot of imaginative dishes too, so it's not just the standard items you see everywhere. I can't say enough nice things about this place. We always get great service and food, and it's one of the only places I'll get up early to visit before work. :)

I have been to this location of Sunrise Sunset several times. The service has always been fine for me, and the food is pretty good breakfast fair. They do have a few "non-traditional" choices (frittatas is all I can think of right now), but for the most part their menu is classic: eggs, pancakes, bacon. My favorite is the veggie sunshine, a skillet homefries, veggies, cheese, and eggs. They put peas and zucchini in the mix, which is interesting and yummy. I have also had their blueberry pancakes, which had real whole blueberries in the batter and on top. The only thing I don't like about this place is they don't allow any substitutions on their menu (except subbing out tomato slices for potatoes for a low-carb deal). I realize this is usually a time issue, if you have a set menu you can usually get the food out faster. But being a vegetarian, would it really be so tough to give me potatoes instead of bacon on the 2-2-2? That is, two pancakes, two eggs, and two bacon slices/sausage links/ham... things. I haven't yet tried their lunch items, but I will definitely be back for breakfast at any rate.

I REALLY wanted to love this place. Despite being a bit tentative due to the 3.5 star reviews, I was impressed with there menu so I went for it. I admittedly started my meal on the wrong foot by burning off most of my taste buds with over zealous hot sauce application. Whoops. It was labeled as the less spicy of the two on the table. I ordered the Black Bean Benedict, since as a vegetarian I typically jump on anything that isn't the standard veggie option. HOW that English muffin survived under all that gelatinous goo is beyond me. What sounded like a mouth water combo of deliciousness was flavorless mush. Perhaps I should've gone for an old standby which is what appeared everyone else was eating...pancakes, scrambled eggs, etc. You can definitely miss this breakfast.

After a night of standard Denver debauchery, Sunrise Sunset is like water on a hangover fire. It soothes, it cools. The menu is fun to read, and even more fun to eat. Nom!

GREAT breakfast , very creative! They make Italian and Mexican style breakfast item's with traditional egg and potatoes theme , an also have a couple of good vegetarian options , and the price is rite!

  • Renee K.

I want to like the place. I keep trying. I will say that my son loves the Lumbre breakfast burrito. I still think their eggs taste a little weird (cooked in oil, not butter?) and the potatoes are almost always undercooked and cold. The service has always been stellar, but I just can't get past the mediocre food. Prices are a bit steep, too.

  • Sean O.

YUM! I really like this place. Their breakfast is always fresh and they've got a good selection of spicy items. I highly recommend their hot chocolate with whipped cream, as well as their country fried steak and Colorado omelet. However, if you have to get one thing here, it is definitely their PANCAKES!

  • Elizabeth B.

Ive eaten here about 4 times. Really good beakfast food in a country diner setting. Great service as well. Nice local option instead of a boring large chain.

  • Mike N.

I used to go to this place a lot and enjoy their breakfast and the environment but it appears the prices are a little higher for basic breakfast food and the service certainly is not what it used to be years ago when I would stop in for a meal. Have an AN great waitress the whole time today that did not pay any attention to our table or anyone else while she stayed behind the register screaming that another staff member and crying certainly did not make me want to go out of my way to come back here anytime soon and the food was okay but nothing special.i'm just glad I had a coupon to save me $10 or I would've been pissed with a $40 bill for basic breakfast and three people. Period

Exactly what a small breakfast diner should be and is. Has been around for many years because it consistently provides good food for the people of the neighborhood. If you are looking for an "cutting edge", "new food", hipster kind of joint, go elsewhere. If you are looking for reliable, good food, made for people who actually eat food---not food trends; this is your joint!

    (4)
  • Bruce D.

WAY OVERPRICED FOR BASIC BREAKFAST. FOOD! The basic breakfast food.... no creativity and zero atmosphere.... at an outlandish price point. Conclusion : eat elsewhere.

  • Ant B.

Been here twice... And it's a decent joint for a run of the mill breakfast. Service was good both times and we were quickly seated.

    (2)
  • Jim V.

The food here was pretty decent. I had the country omelette, and it was probably a bit above average. The potatoes that came with it were unseasoned, but not awful. I hate bitching about price, but the omelette, a 10-oz. Orange juice and tip were $18 at a restaurant that is essentially a greasy spoon with really uncomfortable seating at the breakfast bar. The same thing at Fran's up the block would probably cost about $9-$11. Same with Egg & I. One upside is that this restaurant participates in the United and American airlines dining programs, so if your miles are about to expire on one of those airlines then dining here will extend the expiration date by 18-months.

  • Alex B.

This is a great little restaurant with delicious food. There known for there eggs and I can see why. The have a lot of different Benedicts and omelets that are delicious. There something here for every one! I would give them at least 3.5 stars or higher.

    (3)
  • Kathleen L.

The food was bland and the coffee weak, the scrambled eggs and potatoes needed something, too boring, but the employees very friendly

    (1)
  • Mike J.

I get the 2+2+2 every time. It comes with two buttermilk hotcakes, two sausage links and two scrambled eggs. I occasionally, like to get a side of their buttermilk biscuits and gravy. All of this, accompanied by a strong cup of Joe... gets my day started off right.
